Crown lengthening

Less gum on show, teeth in proportion.

We correct gummy smiles and short-looking teeth by reshaping the gum line with millimeter precision.

Esthetic gum contouring case at Implantec, before and after

Sometimes the teeth are fine but the gum covers them. Esthetic crown lengthening uncovers the tooth you already have and evens out the gum line. It is a common step before veneers and one of the procedures that changes a smile the most with little effort. See the real case in the gallery.

What it solves

  • Gummy smile (too much gum when you smile)
  • Teeth that look square or short
  • Uneven gum contours from one tooth to the next
  • Not enough visible tooth to place a crown

How it is done

Step by step

  1. 01

    Design

We measure the new contour on photographs and the scan, and mark it in the mouth.

  2. 02

    Procedure

Under local anesthesia we reshape gum and, if needed, a little bone so the result is stable.

  3. 03

    Healing

A week of mild discomfort. The gum matures over a few weeks.

Who is a candidate

Is this for me?

  • Patients with healthy gums and a gummy smile
  • People about to get veneers or crowns who need gum symmetry

Common questions

What people ask us

Will the gum grow back?

If only gum is removed without touching bone, it can partially return. That is why in many cases we do crown lengthening with bone reshaping, which is stable.
